7:36 am
if sequestration happens. and my column focuses on the affect on medical research. the national institutes of health provides almost all of funding in the country for basic medical research. and they are very excited about a lot of promising things going on in health research right now especially related to flu, cancer, muscular dystrophy, diabetes, alzheimers. and they say they are already strapped. they've actually been losing ground in terms of how much medical research they can fund over the last 10 years and if sequestration happens, it's going to be a really big set back. >> do we know how much money they do stand to lose? >> they stand to lose $1.6 billion just the national institutes of health. not the other health related federal
7:37 am
agencies and institutions in our region. so $1.6 billion. that's about 5%. but the thing is their budget has been flat for about 10 years. with the affects of inflation, they've actually lost about 20% in terms of purchasing power. so that's a loss of 20%. now another 5%. and this is for the basic research into medicine that leads to all of our medical breakthroughs. pharmaceutical companies, they won't invest in this research. cause it doesn't promise a quick payoff. the federal government, taxpayers, us, we pay for the basic research. and the most promising stuff, the pharmaceutical companies grab and develop drugs. and they've saved hundreds of thousands of lives. and there's a lot of really interesting stuff going on especially because of genetics advances in technology.
7:38 am
and all this stuff is going to get stalled or set back. >> and you write about some instances where there are research labs and the like where technology just sitting. there's this one example at children's national medical center where this guy, this doctor who runs this center for genetic research there, he's got four high tech gene sequencing machines and he doesn't have money to use them all the time. they sit unused all of the time. if he had $10 million he could be providing information that would diagnose thousands of kids ailments, kids with muscular problems, basically. muscular dystrophy and related nerve disorders. and this stuff is sitting there unused because the nih doesn't have the money to give him. >> it's not livelihoods. it's lives. you have

to write your congress people and try to stop sequestration. we talked about the washington redskins, the controversy over their name. they've been criticized. they are now responding during the last couple days on their web site, there's been dialogue about this. there's been give and take. and criticism. they've responded as well . larry michael the voice of the redskins does a show somewhere comcast redskins channel whatever it is, redskins.com. and they've been talking about it. have you seen some of this? >> i've seen the discussion of the push back, basically against people like me who have called on them to change the name. >> and one of the things they seem to be doing. there's dozens of high schools that still use the name redskins. is that a good defense? >> it's certainly a defense.
7:40 am
there are two sides to this argument. no one ever said otherwise. there are some high schools including i believe at least a few in native american communities that use the term redskins. defenders of the name say it shows it's not insulting. a lot of these schools are in areas that don't have a whole lot of native americans around. so how would they know? there's no one to be insulted in affect. if you look at what national indian organizations say, they say this is offensive, it's a long time, should have been gotten rid of a long time ago. and there's been an on-going campaign for years to get rid of these names and indian mascots and imagery in team.
7:41 am
and more than 3,000 indian names and mascots for professional college and high school teams around the country. and now they are down to fewer than 1,000. more than two thirds of them have been got rid of. but there's still at least 900 left and these are some of them. >> and looks like the redskins are digging in. thanks for coming in. washington post metro section columnist. read them today. we'll be back with more in a couple moments. it's 7:41.
